In a move that’s been described as “insulting to the men” on Twitter, wedding guests in Singapore are offering a special wedding reception for the first time, raising $1,000,000 in donations to women’s causes in Singapore.
The “wedding-inspired” dress, which was worn by “The Wrecking Crew,” is now available for sale at the Wedding Day, a wedding-themed store in Singapore that is part of the same chain of retailers as a number of other events held around the world this week.
The shop’s owner, Kim Chan, told The Associated Press that the reception was held to honor the women who were involved in the protests in Singapore and the women’s right to vote in the country’s 2017 general election.
“I want to give this dress to these women who are so passionate about the issue of the right to choose and the right of women to express themselves,” Chan said.
“I want people to know that we will support them in whatever way we can.”
The event was held at the shop in a bid to help women feel at ease and be able to express their opinions.
The dress has been available on the wedding day for less than a week, and the store has already sold over 50 dresses in a matter of hours, Chan said, adding that it is a first in Singapore for a wedding dress.
The sale comes at a time when women are often attacked in Singapore, which has been plagued by gender-based violence and is currently under a national crackdown on anti-women violence.
Chan said that the event was also to support the women involved in a similar campaign to push for gender equality in the nation’s public spaces.
“There’s been a lot of protests and people have been saying they want a revolution and they want to have more control over their lives,” Chan told AP.
“But I think we can do it together.”AP reported that the dress was first launched last year in Hong Kong, where the Women’s Rights Campaign, an advocacy group for women, is based.
The group has also been hosting events for women across Asia to highlight the rights of women.
The shop is currently selling the wedding dress for $1 and is offering a discount for guests who wish to purchase the wedding gown for more than $2,500.
